Seeds of Strength: The Pigability Vision

Helping Each Other Can Make The World Better

About Us Pigability Empowering Project

From disability to ability

In the southwest of Uganda, near the lush rainforests that are home to the country’s famous mountain gorillas, life is profoundly different from that of the USA and countries in Europe —both in heartening and heartbreaking ways.

In many communities, traditional gender roles persist strongly. Men are often considered the heads of the household, and in some tribes, this authority is used to deny women basic resources unless they earn money through small-scale work such as weeding or digging. Often, the income they manage to earn is spent by their husbands in bars, leaving the women and children with little to survive on.

Women here bear the greatest burden—working tirelessly to provide for their families. In conditions of extreme poverty, some women may only own a single pair of underwear, or none at all. Basic hygiene essentials like soap, toothbrushes, and sanitary products are luxuries many cannot afford.

Families tend to have many children, partly as a means of securing support in old age. While children are often seen as blessings, disabilities are tragically perceived as curses. In such cases, disabled children are hidden away, and some families face intense pressure from their communities—even calls for the child’s life to be ended. Fathers often abandon these families, leaving young mothers alone to care for their children without support or assistance. Sadly, social welfare systems are virtually nonexistent in these areas.

We have identified nearly 30 impoverished families caring for disabled children in and around the village of Bwindi. We met a 22-year-old mother who had resorted to boiling banana palm leaves to feed her three-year-old son after being abandoned by her husband. In Kisoro, another nearby village, 26 mothers struggle daily to earn enough through manual labor to feed their children.

Electrical Inspections

>Electrical inspections are essential for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and compliance of any building's wiring system. Regular inspections help prevent hazards such as electrical fires, shocks, or equipment damage by identifying faulty wiring, outdated components, or code violations. Whether it's a home, office, or community facility, professional inspections provide peace of mind and help maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Educations

Education is the foundation for a brighter future. It empowers individuals with knowledge, skills, and confidence to break the cycle of poverty and build stronger communities. At Pigability, we believe every child deserves access to quality learning, regardless of their background or location. By supporting education, we are investing in generations of leaders, innovators, and changemakers who will shape a better tomorrow for Uganda and beyond.

True Stories, Real Lives

True Stories, Real Lives

Single mothers in Uganda are often written about, and many organizations focus on helping them. Few mention single fathers. A 37-year-old father of three. With sad eyes, he admits that life is hard, that he struggles not to sink into depression. He says that things were more or less okay when he had a small job as a waiter at a hotel. The salary was nothing to brag about, but it was enough to pay the rent and buy some food for himself and his small family. It wasn't enough to buy new clothes, but it wasn't that bad. The most important thing was to be able to pay the rent and feed the family. Then 2020 came, and the whole world was turned upside down. Jonan lost his job and income, and thus the difficulties began. The little he had managed to put aside quickly ended. When there was no school money, the eldest son was expelled from school and was no longer allowed to attend classes. The cohabitant was not happy with a man who no longer earned money, and she decided to run away. She left both the eldest boy and the three-month-old baby for Jonan to take care of. - Because of the lockdown, I couldn't travel to any of the neighboring countries to look for a job there, Jonan explains. - I thought and pondered a lot and ended up getting stressed and depressed.

Ever since the world opened up again, Jonan has been trying to find another job, but without success. If you don’t have the right contacts, it’s practically impossible. He also doesn’t have the money to “buy” a job (that is, to bribe someone)..
One day, a fire broke out in the house, and while Jonan was busy putting out the fire, someone saw fit to run away with the few belongings he had. Jonan’s mother, a poor, elderly woman, let the two boys live with her while Jonan constantly tried to get back on his feet financially..
One day, a young woman appeared who claimed that Jonan was the father of her baby, and she demanded that he now take care of her daughter. She herself went away and left the baby behind..
Jonan lives alone with his small family. He takes care of his old mother and his children. They live in a remote small village where there is no electricity, and where they have to walk a few kilometers to fetch water. The children are all he has, and the only thing he has to give them is attention, time and love.
– Life is tough these days, he says. – Education is the most important gift parents can give their children, but I can’t afford to send my children to school..
There are some kind neighbors who bring some fruit and a few eggs now and then, but on the whole the family needs money for food and clothes and school fees..
