Nicholas was born disabled and could not walk at first.
After some years, with the grace of God, as he puts it, he managed to get up and walk. As most young people he dreamed of a sweetheart, but no girls were interested in a disabled man. Nicholas felt very disappointed and thought he had to go through life as a single man. That was until Maria came along and said yes to marriage. They are now the parents of three kids and in addition, they also take care of a child found on the street. They have started to build a home, but with hardly any money, the house is still not finished. In one room, they have one bed shared by the whole family, and in the other room, they keep a couple of sheep.
When we came to visit, Maria had taken the kids to to see and help her sick mother who lives in a different village.
She had to close her small business where she is selling “obushera”, a fermented drink made from sorghum. This is the only income the family has and with the shop closed, for sure no money is coming in. And, as so many poor families, they lack most things that other people take for granted.
We had to return another day in order to meet Maria.
