True Stories, Real Lives. Imagine that you are a 14-year-old girl, or imagine if it was your daughter, sister or niece, born deaf and dumb in a country where money is not enough and no help is available.
One day while the girl is home alone, a grown man comes and takes advantage of her disability and rapes her. This happened to Trust, a beautiful young lady who is now 19 years old. She cannot speak to people when her parents are not present and can translate, but between them Trust and her parents have learned to understand each other with a self-made sign language.
When we visited the family at their home and greeted Trust, she gave us a smile that made her whole face light up. Truly a beautiful young woman, both inside and out.
After being raped, she was tested for HIV, and the family thanks God that the girl tested negative and did not get pregnant.
Today, Trust wants to learn how to use a knitting machine, she already knows how to sew.
Trust has an old sewing machine, but there are not many customers to sew for in the small neighbourhood. She wants to be able to rent a small house in the city where she can bring her sewing machine and get customers and a little income. As it is now, she just sits at home and waits for someone to show up and ask to have something sewn.
The young lady also dreams of a future that holds a husband and children.
There is no help from the government, but she and her family have faith that God, who taught them sign language, can also do other kinds of wonders.
– Maybe one day I will have my own clothing brand in America, she says in sign language, and then she laughs. One can always hope!
