True Stories, Real Lives.

Given is a six years old boy. He should be running around and playing with other kids, but he was born with crippled feet and cannot walk, which exacerbates the family’s challenges. The family consists of Given, his brother Brilliant, who is about one year old, and their mother Moreen who is 32 years old.

Their current living situation is precarious. The house they used to live in collapsed October last year while Given was home alone. Fortunately, he was not physically injured, but returning nightmares may indicate that it has left its mark on another level.
The house cannot be repaired; they need a completely new house. So far, they have been living with the children’s grandmother on the father’s side since the house collapsed. Although she was welcoming at first, they have faced a number of challenges during the months. The father has abandoned them. He was not man enough to handle the responsibility of two families, both of whom have children with special needs, and he ran away to be with a third woman. He is providing no support whatsoever.

The family’s health is a concern due to limited access to nutritious food. They lack land for farming, rely on poor-quality food, and sporadic labor from their mother to survive. She digs in the soil of others, which is hard work and doesn’t pay much.

Daily challenges include fetching water from a very remote source in the mountains. They live in poverty and lack most things, even basic necessities such as toilet paper, soap for body and laundry, toothbrushes and toothpaste, diapers for the baby and sanitary pads for the mother.

Given has his nightmares and may experience stress due to their living situation, his disability and lack of stability. No child should have to go through this. The doctors might be able to to correct Given’s feet by using plaster, but Moreen says that they can’t afford going to the hospital.
