To create lasting change, we are launching a sustainable microloan program called Pigability, inspired by a successful initiative in northern Uganda. With the support of local Ugandan partners, we aim to help poor women/families achieve financial independence by providing them with a productive asset—a pig.
Each woman/family receives one vaccinated pig, which she raises and breeds. As part of the program, she commits to returning two piglets: one as an “interest pig,” and the other to pass on to the next woman in need. On average, a pig helps support one woman and up to five children. Calculations show that each pig, through reproduction and redistribution, can positively impact up to 54 individuals.
These pigs serve not only as a sustainable source of income but also as a form of financial security. Offspring can be sold or used for food, and pigs are relatively easy to care for in Uganda’s fertile environment.
We are currently seeking sponsors to help us launch this project in the villages of Bwindi and Kisoro.
The women build pig pens themselves using local materials and sign contracts prepared by a Ugandan lawyer to ensure transparency and accountability.
